"He maketh me to lie down in green pastures

From Phillip Keller's book, "a shepherd looks at Psalm 23" which I am using for Bible Study at Prairie View Assisted Living.

It is not generally known that sheep are so timid and easily panicked that even a stray jackrabbit suddenly bounding from behind a bush can stampede a whole flock. When one startled sheep runs in fright a dozen others will bolt with it in blind fear, not waiting to see what frightened them. One day a friend came to call on us from the city. She had a tiny Pekingese pup along. As she opened the car door the pup jumped out on the grass. Just one glimpse of the unexpected little dog was enough. In sheer terror over 200 of my sheep which were resting nearby leaped up and rushed off across the pasture. As long as there is even the slightest suspicion of danger from dogs, coyotes, cougars, bears or other enemies the sheep stand up ready to flee for their lives. They have little or no means of self-defense. They are helpless, timid, feeble creatures whose only recourse is to run.

When I invited friends to visit us, after the Pekingese episode, I always made it clear their dogs were to be left at home. I also had to drive off or shoot other stray dogs that came to molest or disturb the sheep. Two dogs have been known to kill as many as 292 sheep in a single night of unbridled slaughter. Ewes, heavy in lamb, when chased by dogs or other predators will slip their unborn lambs and lose them in abortions. A shepherd’s loss from such forays can be appalling. One morning at dawn I found nine of my choicest ewes, all soon to lamb, lying dead in the field where a cougar had harried the flock during the night.

It was a terrible shock to a young man like myself just new to the business and unfamiliar with such at- tacks. From then on I slept with a .303  rifle and flash light by my bed. At the least sound of the flock being disturbed I would leap from bed, and calling my faithful collie, dash out into the night, rifle in hand, ready to protect my sheep. In the course of time I came to realize that nothing so quieted and reassured the sheep as to see me in the field. The presence of their master and owner and protector put them at ease as nothing else could do, and this applied day and night.

There was one summer when sheep rustling was a common occurrence in our district. Night after night the dog and I were out under the stars, keeping watch over the flock by night, ready to defend them from the raids of any rustlers. The news of my diligence spread along the grapevine of our back country roads and the rustlers quickly decided to leave us alone and try their tactics elsewhere.

“He maketh me to lie down.”

In the Christian’s life there is no substitute for the keen awareness that my Shepherd is nearby. There is nothing like Christ’s presence to dispel the fear, the panic, the terror of the unknown. We live a most uncertain life. Any hour can bring disaster, danger and distress from unknown quarters. Life is full of hazards. No one can tell what a day will produce in new trouble. We live either in a sense of anxiety, fear and foreboding, or in a sense of quiet rest. Which is it?

Generally it is the “unknown,” the “unexpected,” that produces the greatest panic. It is in the grip of fear that most of us are unable to cope with  the cruel circumstances and harsh complexities of life. We feel they are foes which endanger our tranquility. Often our first impulse is simply to get tip and run from them. Then in the midst of our misfortunes there suddenly comes the awareness that He, the Christ, the Good Shepherd is there. It makes  ll the difference. His presence in the picture throws a different light on the whole scene. Suddenly things are not half so black nor nearly so terrifying. The outlook changes and there is hope. I find myself delivered from fear. Rest returns and I can relax.

This has come to me again and again as I grow older. It is the knowledge that my Master, my Friend, my Owner has things under control even hen they may appear calamitous. This gives me great consolation, repose, and rest. “Now I lay me down in peace and sleep, for Thou God keepest me.”

It is the special office work of God’s gracious Spirit to convey this sense of the Christ to our fearful hearts. He comes quietly to reassure us that Christ Himself is aware of our dilemma and deeply involved in it with us.

And it is in fact in this assurance that we rest and relax.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound [disciplined] mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). The idea of a sound mind is that of a mind at ease- at peace - not perturbed or harassed or obsessed with fear and foreboding for the future.

“I will both lay me down in peace and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Just a thot

Been terribly hot, and to be the same today. Kinda wearing me down. Here's a thot that's good.

Sometimes God doesn't tell us His plan because we wouldn't
believe it anyway.

Flowers and MORE flowers

This is Monica's bouquet.

The following pictures are of the wedding to
take place this coming weekend.

I have second wedding in October with much the same flower arrangements as these but in pink, black, and aqua.

Had a reaction to my allergy shot. I waited the 40 minutes, but had fleeting funny feelings in my throat. Let the clinic, went to Farm and Home, and had gotten on the inside when I felt I was going to faint. I didn't think I could make it back to the clinic so went across the street to the Medicap Pharmacy. They called the clinic and one of the pharmacists drove me in our van to the clinic. They gave me a goodly dose of Benadryl which let me take a good, long afternoon nap. Not sure what brought that all on. Had some water in the basement last Friday. Not sure if there is mold down there. I have 3 fans blowing so it seemed to dry up fairly fast.

Ordered a new camera through Walmart online. It was shipped to the store and is there so am off to get things done before the heat gets too oppressive.

Wednesday June 17, 2009

Countdown to June 27. Here is the glass decoration, I assume it is for each table. I have 20 of these to fix. I have the wrist bokas that are pictured in the previous posting all done. Five in all. I still have the groom and groomsmen's to do. Want to get them all done and pictures taken by this weekend. Then on to the July 11 wedding flowers.
Then next one is August and 2 in October.

Been behind a couple of days as Dad had some "bug" grab him by the throat. He has fever of 102ยบ a couple of days and so weak that took several to get him to the bathroom and back. Monday, yesterday, he called to say he felt more normal. Praise the Lord.

I am anxiously awaiting shipment of "Nikki." She is a Nikon D60 camera. I have been wanting a different camera for several years. One that I can fiddle with settings, take really good close-ups, and good pictures of flowers, landscapes, flower arrangements, and grandkiddos. Been saving birthday and Christmas money for several years. Told Larry that I feel broke. Oh well, it will be nice to have anyway.

Monday night we have a family prayer circle around my friend's parents home. Lynne and her hubby were inside. She is struggling to keep on top of the cancer. The cancer in her throat is pretty much taken care of, but the masticization of the cancer to the lungs and bones is taking it's toll. Her oxygen levels have been very low and are on the rise. She has been very weak and she is having more strength. Back to the prayer circle. There were approximately 150 people  there from church and the community. It was neat to see everyone holding hands and praying around the house.

Must go get allergy shots before the time is up. To be hot and humid here and storms gathering afternoon and evening with strong winds and hail. "doodie dumdrops."

Been long time.....

Sorry about not letting people know what's happening here in the land of corn and swine.
Had a lot of rain and been a cool spring. Days have been just lovely and nights cool. Had several opportunities to take Dad out in the wheel chair and walk him up and down the sidewalk. He seemed to enjoy it. Last evening we went to see him instead of going to the VBS closing program. I suggested that we go out and sit outside for awhile. He really didn't want to go, but I got him to say he would. We were out for a few minutes, and I asked him if he wanted to go in. "No, this is rather delightful. I don't want to go in." We enjoyed the evening for about an hour.
Been getting ready for the Big garage sale of the year. I had gone through enough stuff of Dad's  and some of our things that I had boxes floor to ceiling in the back print room, the south bay of the garage, and the room back of the garage. Andy and Melissa came down last Thursday evening, and we opened up with a  flourish. We had a constant stream of people from 7:30 till 6 p.m. on Friday and from 7:30 till one on Saturday. I advertised it as an estate garage sale.
Our local paper has a reputation for getting things messed up. Sure enough, the house number was wrong, it was 103 instead of 1003. Called them Thursday evening and left a message. Returned a call Friday and was told that all would be well with that evening's paper. Hmmmmm......still 103.
Was interesting that a couple of little old ladies came saying that they had gone into the "piercing parlor" but they didn't have garage sale things around. We had posted signs in the 100 block of Elm so that people would know.
There were 5 groups in the sale, and our gross sales were $1,355 for the 2 days. Held the sale yesterday, and we had sales of $366, and that was with most everything half the price. Today it started raining at 4 a.m. and is still raining. The Lord knows that there is still a bunch of stuff left. Am planning on a "Bag sale" today. Everything is in the garage and will be able to stay that way for people to look it over. Knew that there was a possibility of rain today so planned things as we quit last evening.
VBS was a good week. We had rain one day, but recreation took place in our new "bus barn" of sorts. We topped 150 on Wednesday, but haven't heard what Thursday and Friday's attendance was. This year in crafts we didn't open one can of paint. Can't believe it. We did foamie door knob holders, fabric covered paper mache photo frames, Gospel bracelets, and wire name sculptures accented with colored wire and beads. Had excellent help and the Lord allowed everything to proceed smoothly.
Well now have to focus on upcoming weddings. Have one boka done and the bride e-mailed me and told me that she absolutely loves it. If she is loves it, then I love it. It is very beautiful. We had a rocky start, as the first photos showed the bride that she wanted changes. I endeavor to get the flowers right so that the bride will love them and enjoy her big day. I made up the boka as per her instructions, but when she saw the pictures she wanted a total redo, and that's okay with me. Here's the way it is now.
